How can you tell the sex of your baby?
I had an email the other day asking me if it’s possible to tell the sex of your baby before a scan. Well, the simple answer is no, it’s not possible. There’s lots of old wives tales flying around about this, but none of them have been proven to be true.
For example, carrying the baby high up is supposed to mean it’s a boy, and carrying low down means a girl. Apparently hanging something on a piece of string by your bump to see which way it spins (e.g. a ring or needle) is supposed to give you an idea – left for a boy, right for a girl.
The truth is that the only reliable way to tell the sex of an unborn baby is with an ultrasound scan. Personally, my thoughts on this are that it’s like opening your Christmas presents before Christmas Day – it kind of spoils the surprise!
